This Day in #ReitzFootball History (Nov. 17): Panthers stop Cathedral just short of goal line in 2007 classic

ReitzFootball.com proudly presents “This Day in #ReitzFootball History,” as we look back through almost 100 years of The Mighty Panthers.

The Panthers have played four games on November 17:

  • Overall: 1-3
  • The Panthers have never played at Reitz Bowl
  • Away (1923, 1928, 2001, 2007): 1-3
  • The Panthers have never played on Friday
  • On Saturday: (1923, 1928, 2001, 2007): 1-3

1923: Bicknell 42, Reitz 3

1928: Bosse 14, Reitz 6 (Tiny Ten game)

2001: Ben Davis 61, Reitz 20 (Class 5A Semi-State Championship)

2007 *: Reitz 35, Indianapolis Cathedral 34 (Class 4A Semi-State Championship)

“Trailing 34-21, Ryan McIntosh caught a 4-yard pass from his brother Paul to bring the deficit to only six. But after getting the ball back, Reitz threw an interception.

Cathedral seemingly had the game wrapped up, with possession of the ball at midfield with just over a minute left, but the Irish incredibly fumbled the ball. Paul McIntosh then found Tyler Julian alone in the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Houston Hobbs nailed the extra point and Reitz went up by a point with :37 left on the clock.

However, Cathedral almost did the unthinkable, completing a Hail Mary pass as time expired unbearably close to the goal line.

The radio announcer shouted touchdown, but thankfully, he had to correct himself, and the Panthers became state bound for the first time since 1977.”
