It’s the biggest game on both teams’ schedules. Over 10,000 will likely come together this Friday night at the storied Reitz Bowl to experience the battle for the Golden Acorn, aka the West Side Nut Club Trophy game, aka Reitz vs. Mater Dei!
Championships on the line
Obviously the Golden Acorn will be up for grabs, but the results of the city and SIAC titles also rest partially on the fate of this game.
While Mater Dei is out of contention for the city title, the Panthers, which have already clinched a share, can win it outright with a win. A Reitz loss gives Central a chance to share the title, as well.
The Southern Indiana Athletic Conference championship race is a little more complex. Mater Dei still has a shot at the title, and, should they beat the Panthers, the Wildcats would also need Central to lose. That would force a three-way tie for league honors between Mater Dei, the Bears and the Panthers. Should that happen, Castle can also earn a share with a win over Memorial.

Head coaches
Reitz head coach Andy Hape, at 35-9 overall, is 0-3 against the Wildcats. Mater Dei head Mike Goebel, who is 201-55 in his 20th year with the Wildcats, is 10-9 against the Panthers.
Series history
While Reitz leads the all-time series, which started in 1952, 44 games to 20, the Wildcats have won the past three games and four of the past five.
