Brunson named Mount Vernon’s new coach

Cory Brunson, an all-state player for the Panthers in 1996, will leave Harrison and become the new head football coach at Mount Vernon High School, it was announced yesterday at a press conference.

“I’m looking forward to another opportunity,” said Brunson, who had been the head coach at Harrison, in a 44News interview.

From 2003 to 2007, Brunson was an assistant under former Mount Vernon coach Paul Maier, who resigned in January. Maier had been with the Wildcats since 1998 and had an 88-115 record.

Brunson was also an assistant for the Panthers from 2008 to 2012. In 2013 he accepted the head coaching position at Harrison. At the east side school, he compiled a 21-23 record and was named the 2015 Courier & Press All-Metro Coach of the Year.
