This Day in #ReitzFootball History (Nov. 15): Fate of 1947 game hinged on which team belonged to "mud smeared youngster" who recovered blocked punt in Panther end zone

ReitzFootball.com proudly presents “This Day in #ReitzFootball History,” as we look back through almost 100 years of The Mighty Panthers.

The Panthers have played five games on November 15.

  • Overall: 5-0
  • At Reitz Bowl (1930, 1947, 1957): 3-0
  • Away (1924): 1-0
  • At unknown location (1919): 1-0
  • On Friday (1957): 1-0
  • On Saturday: (1919, 1924, 1930, 1947)

1919: Reitz 6, Central 2nd Team 2

1924: Reitz 19, Boonville 7 (Tiny Ten Conference game)

1930: Reitz 6, Central 0 (Tiny Ten Conference game)

1947: Reitz 6, Memorial 2 (SIAC game)

The game, another mud bowl, “was bursting at the seams with suspense right down to the last second.”

“With 30 seconds to play [and the Panthers leading, 6-0], Memorial blocked a Reitz punt and the ball was covered by a mud smeared youngster. Few, if any, were positive that it was a Tiger or a Panther on the oval. If a Tiger, it was a touchdown. If a Panther, it was a safety and two points. Even the referee wasn’t sure. He had to ask the boy what team he was on. The boy was Guard Cyril Williams and he yelled ‘Reitz’.”

1957 *: Reitz 21, Memorial 6 (SIAC game)

“For two quarters last night at Reitz Bowl, it looked as if Reitz had met its match. But the unbeaten Panthers regained some of their previous brilliant form in the second half to crunch out a 21-6 win over a Memorial team which would not give up in its final game of the season.

The hard earned victory boosted Reitz’ record to 8-0. It also kept the Panthers’ streak of 22 games without a defeat intact. But Reitz, already acclaimed Indiana’s 1957 prep grid champion by the INS, had to put up its greatest effort to achieve the triumph.”
