Reitz opened in 1916? New evidence puts 100-year celebration plans up in air

While preparing for the 100-year anniversary of F.J. Reitz High School, lots of research has gone into documenting the school’s history. However, the discovery of a yearbook from 1916 has suddenly soured centennial celebrations.

The yearbook was recently found by Mike Whicker, a local author who is a former Panther football coach and teacher.

“If the school’s doors actually opened in 1916, and not 1918 as we’ve been led to believe,” said Whicker, “that would mean that the 100-year anniversary has already come and gone.”

Celebration plans will likely proceed, but this news does put a damper on the festivities.

Added Whicker, “who wants to celebrate a 102-year anniversary?”
