Recap of the Oct. 16 game

    Podcast transcript:
Hello everyone welcome to this week’s edition of the ReitzFootball.com Podcast presented by Reis Tires, where we go in chronological order to recap EVERY game in the history of Reitz High School Football. I’m your host, Dan Engler.

Let’s go back in time to October, 1920. Last week, the Panthers went to Mount Vernon and defeated the Wildcats, 14-12. That episode and all our podcasts are available by going to ReitzFootball.com and clicking on PODCAST in the top menu.

This week, the Panthers head to Owensville. The Kickapoos have a strong team, having already beaten Mount Vernon, 70-0 and Petersburg, 44-18. Of note, the Panthers had barely beaten Mount Vernon by two, while the Kickapoos had won by 70!

“For the first half of the game, both teams were evenly matched,” according to the Oct. 16, 1920 recap of the game in the Evansville Courier. “But during the last two periods the local eleven drew away from the visitors and scored almost at will.”

Also, we’re not exactly sure what the final score was. Five different sources report four different tallies. The Evansville Courier and Reitz historians said 33-6, the Owensville yearbook reports 39-6, the Reitz yearbook indicated 40-6, while the Press printed 43-7. All agree that the Kickapoos won and most agree that it was at Owensville, but the Reitz yearbook said it was at home.

The Panthers fell to 1-1 while Owensville improved to 3-0.

Next week, we’ll look at the Panthers’ rematch against Mount Vernon.

Remember, this podcast is brought to you free of charge by our friends at Reis Tire. As the series continues, we’ll eventually cover all 1,000+ games. With every edition, we’ll preview and recap the next game in chronological order.
