Reitz added one more to their six-game win streak, toppling Madison, 56-7, last Friday night. Their last loss came at the hands of Central, the Panthers’ opponent for tonight’s Sectional 16 semifinal.
On Sept. 7, trailing, 29-10, foul weather intervened and forced a delay to Saturday. The Panthers came out on fire, and, despite falling short, 36-31, most point to that game as the moment the Panthers turned things around.
Reitz (7-3) hasn’t lost since that night and wound up sharing the city title with Mater Dei. Central (6-3) could have also won a share, but lost to their northside rival, 23-8, on Oct. 12. The Bears received a bye last week.
This will be the teams’ eighth meeting in the past four years. Last fall, Reitz and Central won a game apiece, with the Panthers winning the regular season encounter, surviving 35-34 in overtime, while the Bears knocked Reitz out of the postseason, winning, 37-35, in the sectional semifinal. The teams also met twice in 2009 & 2010, with the Panthers winning all four of those match-ups. Altogether, Reitz leads the all-time series, which began in 1921, 66-30-4.
