Next on “The Top 10 Most Offensive Teams in Reitz Football History!” at No. 8 are the 1974 Panthers. Coach Bob Padgett‘s only team to make the Top 10, they scored 369 points in 10 games, averaging 36.9 points per game.

They were ranked No. 3 and 4 overall in the state in the AP and UPI polls, respectively (back then, they ranked teams overall, not by class). Their only loss was by six to Central (20-14), but Reitz still won the West Side Nut Club and city championships.

They were barely edged out of the SIAC title (they finished a half game behind Harrison, who Reitz beat, 28-13) and a playoff berth (only four teams in three classes qualified back then).

They had several players named to all-state (Rick Ary, Bob Johnson, Bill Phillips, Mark Williams), including Marlon Flemming, a Reitz Football Hall of Famer.

Some of Coach Padgett’s other noteworthy teams

  • #14: 1971 (averaged 34.40 points per game)
  • #19: 1977 (averaged 32.54 points per game)
  • #21: 1973 (averaged 30.22 points per game)
