Week 9: Reitz vs. Mater Dei presented by 125 Years of Southwestern Indiana High School Football

It’s that time of year again. Brother vs. brother…cousin vs. cousin…neighbor vs. neighbor. It’s time for the annual battle between the Mighty Panthers and the Mater Dei Wildcats for the West Side Nut Club’s Golden Acorn Trophy!

The Panthers, who are the underdogs going into Friday’s game at the Bowl, can spoil a Wildcat championship party, possibly ruining two titles for our West Side rivals.

Mater Dei needs some help to win the SIAC (check out the Courier & Press’ great breakdown on how the league can finish in a 5-way tie), but the Wildcats are in the drivers’ seat for the city race.

Memorial has already clinched a share (finishing 5-1 in Evansville). Central and Mater Dei are both 4-1, so wins would give them a share with the Tigers.

Dan Engler's love for Reitz Football goes back a long time. Engler played for the Panthers all four years of high school and graduated in 1996.
That summer, as the popularity of the Internet began to explode, Engler's search for Reitz Football information came up empty, so his father suggested he create a website. Engler taught himself HTML and launched the Unofficial Reitz High School Football Home Page that August.
Since then, Engler, through ReitzFootball.com, has spent the past 25 years chronicling the rich history and tradition of Reitz High School Football.
Engler and his wife, Melissa, have two sons, Logan and Micah, and a daughter, Juliette. Engler has traveled all over the world but is proud to call Evansville his home.
