EVANSVILLE, Ind. — In what school officials are calling a “bold step forward in game-day atmosphere,” Reitz High School announced Wednesday morning that it plans to introduce a live panther mascot to the sidelines beginning with the 2026 football season.
The initiative, which has reportedly been in development for several months, is part of a broader effort to “enhance school spirit and create a unique home-field advantage at the Bowl.”
“This is about tradition meeting innovation,” according to Panther head coach Cory Brunson. “We’re the Mighty Panthers, and we felt it was time to fully embrace that identity.”
A First for the Area
While live animal mascots are not unheard of at the collegiate level, the move would make Reitz one of the only high schools in the state – and possibly the nation – to feature a live big cat at athletic events.
According to preliminary plans, the panther would be:
- Positioned along the Reitz sideline during home games
- Accompanied at all times by a licensed professional handler
- Housed in a secure, mobile enclosure when not making “appearances”
School officials emphasized that safety protocols are a top priority.
“The animal will be highly trained and closely supervised,” Brunson added. “There will be no direct interaction with players, coaches, or officials… unless absolutely necessary on third down.”
Game-Day Impact
The presence of a live panther is expected to bring a new level of intensity to Friday nights at the Bowl.
Planned features include:
- Pre-game tunnel moment where the panther is visible as the team takes the field
- Defensive third-down appearances near the sideline
- Occasional halftime walkthroughs (weather and opponent permitting)
Visiting teams will reportedly receive a pregame briefing that includes “basic awareness guidelines,” though officials noted there is “no cause for concern.”
“We don’t anticipate any issues,” Brunson clarified. “As long as everyone remains calm, avoids sudden movements, and doesn’t resemble prey, everything should run smoothly.”
Community Reaction
Early reaction from the Reitz community has been mixed but intrigued.
Some fans have praised the creativity behind the idea, calling it a “next-level home-field advantage,” while others have raised questions about logistics, cost, and… general panther-related unpredictability.
Richard Nau, a former teacher and coach summed it up simply: “I’ve seen a lot of things at the Bowl over the years. This would definitely be a first.”

Looking Ahead
School officials say more details—including the panther’s name, handler information, and transportation logistics—will be announced in the coming months.
A formal unveiling is tentatively planned for late summer, with the goal of having the mascot fully integrated into the game-day experience by Week 1.
Until then, fans are encouraged to stay tuned for updates as the program continues to “explore new ways to elevate Panther pride.”
Editor’s Note: After further review… the only panther expected on the sidelines this fall will be the ones in helmets.
Happy April Fools’ Day.
